There will be two (probably part in-class and part take-home) exams and a final examination. The midterms will probably be held during the weeks of April 12 and May 10. Our final exam will be administered Friday June 4 at 8:00 am. The place is to be determined.
We will use our X-hour each week with two ends in mind. A significant part of the period will be spent working on a collection of problems. These problems will either be somewhat non-standard or involve some computation. Each student in the class is expected to turn in a written solution to the problems. I will grade one paper from each group and that will be the group's grade. I will read and look at the other papers in the group but the grades for those papers will not be determined. The other use of the X-hour is, if time permits, you can ask me and others questions about the homework assignment due the following day.
The course grade will be based upon the scores on the homework, two hour exams and the final exam. The point breakdown is as follows:
On Exams: No help given or received On Homework and Group Problem Sets: Collaboration is permitted and encouraged, but NO COPYING . In other words, you should feel free to talk to other students while you are in the process of thinking about a problem. However, when it comes time to write up your solutions, you should do this by yourself without outside assistance.
Students with special needs who will be taking this course and may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see their instructor as soon as possible, certainly within the first two weeks of the course. Also, they should stop by the Academic Skills Center in 301 Collis to register for support services. |
