Exams

There will be two (probably part in-class and part take-home) exams and a final examination. The midterms will probably be held during the weeks of April 12 and May 10.

Our final exam will be administered Friday June 4 at 8:00 am. The place is to be determined.

Homework Policy and Guidelines

  • Written homework will be assigned daily and will be collected weekly, due at the beginning of Friday's class. Each Friday the homework assigned Monday and Wednesday of that week and Friday from the week before will be collected.

While homework is collected once a week, by no means is this a suggestion that you should wait until Thursday night to start the assignment. You are welcome to tempt fate by waiting, but ...

  • All homework assignments will be posted on the course's Homework web page.
  • Late homework will not be accepted in the absence of divine intervention or matters of similar weight.
  • Unexcused late and missing papers count zero.
  • Homework is to be written neatly using one side of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Do not use paper from a spiral notebook unless you can tear off the ragged edge. All papers are to be stapled.

Group Problem Sessions

We will use our X-hour each week with two ends in mind. A significant part of the period will be spent working on a collection of problems. These problems will either be somewhat non-standard or involve some computation. Each student in the class is expected to turn in a written solution to the problems. I will grade one paper from each group and that will be the group's grade. I will read and look at the other papers in the group but the grades for those papers will not be determined.

The other use of the X-hour is, if time permits, you can ask me and others questions about the homework assignment due the following day.

Grades

The course grade will be based upon the scores on the homework, two hour exams and the final exam.

The point breakdown is as follows:

    Midterm 1 100 points
    Midterm 12 100 points
    Homework 100 points
    Group Problem Sets 100 points
    Final Exam 150 points
for a total of 550 points.

The Honor Principle

On Exams: No help given or received

On Homework and Group Problem Sets: Collaboration is permitted and encouraged, but NO COPYING . In other words, you should feel free to talk to other students while you are in the process of thinking about a problem. However, when it comes time to write up your solutions, you should do this by yourself without outside assistance.

Special Needs

Students with special needs who will be taking this course and may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see their instructor as soon as possible, certainly within the first two weeks of the course. Also, they should stop by the Academic Skills Center in 301 Collis to register for support services.
