Recreational Activities

Here are some photos of our participants relaxing on hikes, playing soccer, or between conference talks.

The Dartmouth / Upper Valley region is a beautiful place to explore during the summer, on foot, by bike, boat, or car. There are several recreational activities planned, listed below. In your spare time you may want to a) walk up the Appalachian Trail which restarts behind the Hanover Food Coop 0.5 mile from campus, and b) walk the 0.6 mile down to the Connecticut River and rent a canoe or kayak at the Ledyard Canoe Club.

This aerial photo shows Hanover and the Connecticut River (looking north-east from the Vermont side). At the bottom right is an island in the river that you can canoe/kayak to in half an hour from the boat rental spot.

Other local resources:

Sunday July 18

Day hike up Mt Moosilauke (don't worry - there is no snow there in July!). This is a beautiful all-day hike, 3.7 miles to summit (7.4 miles total), with great views in all directions, including the White Mountains. Elevation gain is around 2400'. You do not have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this hike, however it is a good work-out. We'll probably take the Gorge Brook Trail. The trail head is around 50 minutes drive from Dartmouth College; we will share rides and if needs be also take a minivan. Probable departure time from campus is 10am.

This is followed by a complimentary dinner at 6:30pm at the cosy wooden Moosilauke Ravine Lodge.

Wednesday July 21

Afternoon activity: choice of small local hike or kayaking/canoeing on Connecticut River.

Banquet in the evening at the Dartmouth Outing Club on Occom Pond.

Thursday July 22

Margarita and pizza party in the lounge at Kemeny 300.
