Mid-term Paper Assignment

Recall that both the mid-term and the final examinations involve a take-home
mathematical problem-solving part and a research-paper part. The mid-term research
written assignment is to write a five-page double-spaced paper on either a topic taken
from the list below, or a topic agreed upon in advance, on an individual basis, in
conversation with either Dwight or Josh. All papers must involve mathematical ideas and,
where there is overlap, must go significantly beyond what is covered in class. We have
attached the grading sheet that shows the categories and point distribution that we will
use to grade the paper. Also, don't forget to consult the Student Writing section of the
Math 5 website for tips on good writing. The mid-term paper is due in class on Monday,
February 7.

In most cases, we have taken these topics from the work of previous students. Hopefully,

you will be able to find something of interest to you. (We will be adding additional topics

to the list for the final.) In no particular order:
