Mathematics 5
Winter Term 2000
The World According to Mathematics
Dwight Lahr and Josh Laison
Mid-term Paper Assignment
Recall that both the mid-term and the final examinations involve a take-home
mathematical problem-solving part and a research-paper part. The mid-term research
written assignment is to write a five-page double-spaced paper on either a topic taken
from the list below, or a topic agreed upon in advance, on an individual basis, in
conversation with either Dwight or Josh. All papers must involve mathematical ideas and,
where there is overlap, must go significantly beyond what is covered in class. We have
attached the grading sheet that shows the categories and point distribution that we will
use to grade the paper. Also, don't forget to consult the Student Writing section of the
Math 5 website for tips on good writing. The mid-term paper is due in class on Monday,
February 7.
In most cases, we have taken these topics from the work of previous students. Hopefully,
you will be able to find something of interest to you. (We will be adding additional topics
to the list for the final.) In no particular order:
Mathematics in Finance Classes
The Mathematical Fairness of a Tax System
Economic Planning makes Democratic Governments Dependent on Mathematics
Plato and Pythagoras: The Debate on Geometry and Number
Mathematics and Geography
Chemical and Biochemical Processes
The Conflict between Pure and Applied Mathematics
Chess: Can Algorithms Conquer Creative Thought?
