Math 22: Linear Algebra (with Applications)

Summer 2001

Math 22

Lecture times: MWF 10:00-11:05
X-hour Th 12-12:50
Classroom: 105 Bradley
Text: Linear algebra and its applications, by David C. Lay

Homework: Our homework grader is Adeel Meer. He has requested that each section's homework be turned in on a separate page, and that the pages be stapled together. He is willing to be blitzed about any questions you may have. He has been asked to give a grade of 2 for each set for substantially complete solutions, 0 for poor or no solutions, and 1 for a set in between. Your homework score may count for your grade if you end up between two grades; otherwise not.

The next midterm exam has been arranged for Friday, August 10.

Assignment due Monday, August 6:

  Section 4.2:  page 228:  1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 17, 22, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36

Adeel is going home, so no further grading will be undertaken. But the following assignments should prove valuable for the final exam. There is an answer sheet for the even-numbered problems, and Jill Haltigan has a copy of it, which may be xeroxed.

Do this one when you can

  Section 4.6:  page 263:  2-16 (even, 20, 22, 24, 28, 30
  Section 4.7:  page 270:  2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 14
  Section 5.1:  page 302:  1, 3, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18, 24, 25, 27, 29, 30
  Section 5.2:  page 311:  2, 4, 10, 12, 16, 18, 23, 24
  Section 5.3:  page 319:  4-16(even), 23, 24, 25, 27, 28
  Section 5.4:  page 327:  2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 22, 23, 24, 25

The final exam is scheduled. It will be Sunday, August 26, at 1 pm in 102 Bradley. As usual, we cannot afford more than three hours, but that has been adequate so far.

This is the final homework set for you to try:

Office hours: Tu 1-4 and any time I am in (I'll tell you if I have no time)

The honor code: You may discuss the homework with one another. However, in each assignment turned in you must have done the majority of the actual mathematical work, and all of the writeup, independently. Obviously, no collaboration is allowed on the exams.
